About Daddy Went Away

Dear reader,

This story was written over two years ago, and was inspired by the difficult times a friend of mine was having in his marriage. While deeply unhappy with his relationship with his wife, he was hesitant to end the relationship for fear of the damage and pain it would cause his child.  He knew that the unhappiness of his marriage was not good for his son, but at the same time was reluctant to consider separation or divorce, as he could not bear the thought of not being around for every moment of his son’s growth and development.  In the end, my friend and his wife separated, and she gained custody of their child. My friend’s son, who is ten-years old, has adjusted fairly well to the new situation, and fully understands that his parents still love him.

The message of this story is straight-forward: even though parents may stop loving one another, they do not stop loving their children, and that step-parents can be just as loving and involved as biological parents.

My sincere hope is that this story can be used by readers with children who are going through this difficult situation, in order to help their children understand that mom and dad’s love is unconditional and does not change, despite all the other changes that may be occurring around them.
